It’s More Than a Building

I have written several posts on the new building lately. It’s been exciting to see the transformation, even to be a small part of that transformation. However, I don’t want anyone to think that what we at REVO care about is a building. A building is just that…a building. It’s not who we are. It does not define us. That might bring up a couple of questions.

Question 1. If it is not about the building then why work so hard to change it?
We want to create an environment that is inviting and welcoming. We want you to be comfortable when you walk in, to know where to go (who doesn’t want to know where the bathroom is?), to be comfortable leaving your children in our care. That’s not only why we want the building to be appealing, but also why we believe the service on Sunday morning begins in the parking lot. That’s why we have people to help you park and if it is raining to walk you from your car to the door under the protection of an umbrella. It’s why you are greeted and welcomed when you come in by more than one person. It’s why we print identification tags for your children and have fun things for them to do when you drop them off in rWorld. We know that if the environment is stuffy, unwelcoming, and hard to get around then odds are you won’t come back. And we want you to come back because we want you to hear about the amazing love of Jesus, His gospel, and how we are to live in the world for His glory.

Question 2. If it is not about the building, then what is it about?
In order to answer this question, you have to rephrase the question because it’s not about the “what” but the “who”. We exist to spark a revolution of life change through Jesus. That’s why we do everything in the answer from Question 1. We do everything to bring honor, glory, and worth to His holy name. That’s why we are one church in two locations. Next week, people downtown and on the north side will hear the good news of Jesus. Children downtown and on the north side will learn how to live for Jesus. If it was just about a building then we would cease to have a downtown campus. If it was just about REVO then we’d be pushing an agenda of our own making. You’d see no gospel-centeredness anywhere. We want to spread the glory of Jesus in Winston and to the ends of the earth. We want to Love Big, Serve Hard, Grow Deep, Live Bold, and Move Forward because in doing those things we bring honor and glory to Him who saved us

The Finished Product and A Night of Worship

After many long days, even longer nights, numerous amounts of empty paint cans, and countless empty fast food containers, I am happy to report the building is done…almost…for now. There are a couple of more things that we hope will be done this week – like carpet in rWorld and a few more signs around the building – but other than that this phase is complete!

This is the wall leading in to rGarden, which is where I hang out on Sunday mornings. And if you think this is cool,

then this…

and this might just knock your socks off. And this is just rGarden!

Here is a little peek inside the room. I had to take three pictures to get the entire room. I am going to blame it on the size of the room, where I was standing, the camera photo I was using, and maybe the lighting too. If I had PhotoShop I believe I might could put all these pictures together so you could see the room as it really is, but alas, I do not. So you’ll have to use your imagination a wee bit here.
This is what you see when you open the door.

As you turn to the left…

 And even further left….

I took pictures of rTheater, which is incredibly cool, but they came out blurry. I again blame this on the camera phone, the lighting of the room, etc. It has nothing to do with the operator of the camera at all…nothing at all.

Going upstairs, which is really ground level…

Here you have the connections desk in the center of the room. You can’t tell from the photo – maybe I should think about how to operate a decent camera – but there are two iPads on top of the desk, where you can sign up for an rGroup or a mission trip, get more information about things that are going on, etc. There are generally folks hanging out here to help you out if need something, talk with you and welcome you to REVO.

This is our wall of life change. It makes me happy every time I see it. Each picture tells a story of a life or lives that have been changed by Jesus, for Jesus. One of my favorite parts of the building.

This, however, is my absolutely favorite part…

Our friends David and Zena did this….It’s so incredible. I see it and think about all the people in the world who don’t yet know that Jesus loves them, that there is more to life than what they know, that there is One worth living for, worth dying for, worth everything. I think about Isaiah who answered the call to go with “Here am I, send me,” and I pray that I am as obedient as he.

People were working until the last minute, making sure every detail was in place, on Saturday. At 7:00 we had a night of worship. It was a time to come together…and if you are my friend Heather Johnson (aka Preacher’s Wife) you strike a pose…

enjoy the upcoming moment with your spouse…

or your daughter…

meditate on who God is and why we do what we do…

sing out to the God who has gone before us…

and worship with reckless, unadulterated abandonment.

Wrapped in Love

One of REVO’s local strategic ministry partners is Salem Pregnancy Care Center. They exist “to serve Jesus Christ by promoting sexual purity, and through life-affirming ministry to those touched by a crisis pregnancy as they make decisions regarding pregnancy, parenting, adoption, and relationship issues.” We’ve been volunteering there before we even launched back in February 2011.

I am pretty sure at some point in the last year I have mentioned my friend, Erin Etheridge, aka the Fierce Beagle. She had a great idea several months ago – make blankets for the babies of the women who turn to Salem Pregnancy for help. Her name for the blankets…Wrapped in Love.

I fell in love with the idea and wanted to see something she has been dreaming of for a long time become a reality. In the beginning of the summer we hashed out some details, sent out emails, spread the word and got started making blankets. Anyone could come and learn how to sew, crochet or knit. Beginners, experts…all were invited.

We started back in August with around 8 of us making blankets. Erin’s goal was to have 15 of them by September. We have one more week of sewing, crocheting, and knitting, and we are going to end up with over 20 blankets.

My friend, Amber, is at the head of the table in this picture. We’ve all been trying for about a month to figure out how to work her sewing machine. I think Erin’s grandmother, Mrs. Alice, who is to the left of Amber, figured out how to thread the machine. We’ve all struggled with this machine. Hopefully, it’s up and running now.

These little squirts always make our sewing days quite entertaining.

This is Ms. Mary, Erin’s other grandmother. Shes’ Irish. She says such words as “wee” and “lovely”. She has become one of the highlights of my week. I look forward to Tuesday because I know I will see her. I purposefully bring my crocheting so I can have an excuse to sit by her on the couch as she works on her knitting so I can talk to her, not that either of us gets much work done. She has lived an incredible life, seen amazing things, and is one of the loveliest people I know. She reminds me of my grandmothers, and I guess sitting with her for a couple of hours every week makes me somehow feel closer to them. I absolutely cherish this wee, lovely, Irish woman.

Building update

Tons has happened since the last building update. Windows have been blacked out, there’s been tons more painting, there is a stage, rGarden (aka nursery) is about finished up….I can’t wait for the finished product.

This is the stage in rTheater, where all our kids ages 18 months through 5th grade go for large group. Matt Forestieri, a friend at church, and another Matt did the construction in this room. It’s unbelievable.

These two pictures are of the sound booth in rTheater. A SOUND BOOTH!! Matt and Matt had to rip out a counter and sink before they could build this wonderful thing. SO EXCITED!

The following pictures of in rGarden (6weeks olds through 18 months). It’s where I hang out on Sunday mornings. Don’t let the green scare you or make you worried we are all going to go blind. It’s not as bright as it appears…okay, that could be a slight falsehood. It is really bright…bright and incredibly cool.

My friend and neighbor, Shana, worked tirelessly putting this shelving unit together. She’s a hard worker, a great mom and wife, and I am so very glad we are friends.

Kat was working on getting the computers do to whatever it is we need them to do in rWorld. I don’t think it was going very well at this moment.

Sorry for the blurriness of this photo, but I think I captures the essence of Kelley Lambert. This picture is who Kelley is…cheerful, positive, energetic…oh, and she and her husband, Chase, are adopting babies from Ethiopia. Please take just a few minutes and go to their website to learn their story and find out ways you can help two amazing people bring home two amazing babies.

I promise we are not going to stick the babies in the crib while it is on it’s side.

Chase, Kelley’s husband, worked hard blackening out the windows so we can control the lighting in the sanctuary. There are lots of windows. I am going to go out on a limb and say he worked really hard to get this done.

My two favorite guys sitting on the stage. I believe at this point work was being done to take down hanging microphones and the choir pews.

I’ll have more updates soon. Only 3 more days until the launch!

Covered in redness

Lily is having an allergic reaction that is covering her entire body…

what she is allergic to we do not know….

the doctor said to give her antihistamine medicine and it should be gone in 3-4 days…

it’s going to be a long 3-4 days for my sweet, allergic-to-something-but-I-don’t-know-what girl.

Concerned but trying to not worry,
Mom of the darling child in above pictures

A new do

Many of you know that REVO is launching its North Campus in less than two weeks!
That means a ton of work on the building. There’s been a lot of painting going on, not to mention buying furniture, TVs, sound equipment, etc., scrubbing gooey tape residue off windows, putting together cribs, building a stage, getting internet through the whole building, and a gazillion other things.

I will be posting pictures of our progress over the next week and a half. Here are a couple of shots from the first day of painting. I hate there aren’t more but I didn’t have room on my phone for any more pictures. Ya know, ten years ago I never would have dreamed of making the previous statement. It’d have been more like, oops, I ran out of film. Oh how far we’ve come since Zak Morris first carried around that HUMONGOUS phone through the halls of Bayside High.

I digress.

Back to the building.

The first night there was a ton of scrapping, taping trims, putting down plastic, and finally painting.
This is the door to the kitchen which is part of the  main lobby area.

Wait, oh, wait until you see what is going on this wall! It is going to be incredible. I get goosebumps when I think about it.

SO EXCITED!!

Until next time,
MacKenzie

Words, the Meaning of Words, and How I Use Them

There are so many movies that are great, epic movies…movies that are on every “Greatest 100 Movies Ever Made” list…movies that everyone knows quotes from even if they never saw the movie…movies that you can’t believe your friends or spouse or family members have never seen.

A few of these movies would be “The Godfather”, “The Untouchables”, “Taxi Driver”, “Midnight Cowboy”, “Pulp Fiction”, and “Good Will Hunting”. The list goes on and on. I, admittedly, have not seen all of these movies, but I do know some of the best lines. Who doesn’t know “Hey, I’m walkin’ here,” from “Midnight Cowboy”?

What I find with so many “great” movies is that they have an incredible amount of foul language in them. “Good Will Hunting” was an great screenplay but I couldn’t focus on it because of all the bad language. We just watched “Silver Lining Playbook” and again, a really good screenplay, but so much unnecessary bad language. Both movies would have been perfectly good without it.

So why is it there to begin with? Why do we use them. I suggest that “bad” words are used to describe or give emphasis. But who said those words were “bad” to begin with?

That made me think about other words we use, like awesome, glorious, great, majestic. All of these words are used to describe God. I use them to describe Him and things in everyday life. For example, I might tell Paul he took an awesome picture or if I have something really good to eat I might say it is glorious. But these are words used to describe the God of the universe. The One who is holding me together as I type these words. Why would I use the word glorious to describe food in one breath and in the next use it to describe Him?

Maybe it’s that I don’t know the definition of these words. Let’s define them.
Awesome – Expressive of or inspiring awe. These leads one to define “awe”, which is an emotion variously combining dread, veneration, and wonder that is inspired by authority or by the sacred or sublime.
Glorious – possessing or deserving glory; marked by great beauty or splendor
Great – notably large in size; remarkable in magnitude, degree, or effectiveness; eminent, distinguished; chief or preeminent over others
Majestic –  having or exhibiting sovereign power, authority, or dignity

It seems simple to me to call a wave totally awesome now. Not that I do that, but I am sure somewhere in the world there is a surfer on a beach who has called a wave totally awesome today. Does it undermine the word glorious when I use it in reference to God and a slice of pie?

What would it look it if we did the same thing for words that describe God that we did for “bad” words at some point in history? We made “bad” words have a “bad” meaning. Why not have “Godly” words have a “Godly” meaning again?

Super Barks

Lily has had an alter ego for approximately the past two years, affectionately called Lily Puppy. As you might can guess she acts like a puppy. She barks, howls, growls, pretends to eat and drink from her bowl, plays fetch, scratches with her “hind” leg, etc, etc. She even goes so far as to not respond to you unless you call her Lily Puppy. We’ve gotten so used to it we can understand what she is saying when she barks. For example, I’ll say, “Lily Puppy, would you like to go outside?” Lily will respond with a bark that is in the tone of an affirmation. What can I say? She has a great imagination and it helps make the days more interesting.
Her intensity only increased when she saw the movie “Bolt”, as one might imagine. Wouldn’t your desire to be a dog increase after seeing a movie about a super dog, too?
Earlier this week my friend Heather and I took our kids to a park. Lily started playing with the other kids who were there. I was so excited to see her playing with kids she didn’t know, reflecting how she never meets a stranger and can get along with anyone. Then, I noticed she was growling at the them. Then there was a bark or two. And then…
What happened next was one of those moments you are glad someone else witnessed so people will believe it is true. I saw my daughter bend over, put her hands on the ground…
and…
and…
superbark the children in front of her. It looked a little something like this, with the dramatic “paws” going into place and everything:

Wondering if I can understand dogs better now,
The mom of Lily Puppy

Whispers

When you go overseas on a short term mission trip you expect some God-sized moment, an emotional response to what you see and experience, to never want to leave, to hear God more clearly…the list could go on.
While in Cuba the people around me were having these moments. It’s not that I wasn’t. I just don’t think I ever had a HUGE moment. I had small whispers of moments.

When we were sitting around in the hotel room in Miami for our first team meeting Meredith and Ashton started playing and singing. They weren’t one phrase in before the rest of us joined in. That moment brought a team who had only know each other for a few hours into a closer relationship with one another. That was the moment we became a team. But it came in a whisper of a moment.

Watching the sun rise over the ocean was magnificent. Before the sun ever reaches the horizon, its rays are taking over the darkness and not matter how much the darkness tries to stay it can’t. The light from the sun is just too strong. The grandness of who God is and that we can see Him in every part of creation hit me…in a gentle whisper.

Sitting with one of my teammates as she poured out her heart at the sadness and hurt she was feeling about not getting to see the children we’d spent two days with was heartbreaking and encouraging. It was heartbreaking because she was hurting. She loves big, with all she has, with no hindrances. That was encouraging. And God spoke in a whisper to me as I spoke with her that it is okay to love even when it cost us something. After all, that’s how Jesus loves us.

Listening to a Cuban pastor explain the wonders of God and worshiping Him as we all sat crowded and sweating in small living room was one of the highlights. The words were almost whispered as he spoke them.

Watching my teammates as they interacted with children and teenagers was encouraging. I couldn’t help but stand back to watch them, smiling to myself. Seeing that God uses the quiet and shy of us, the outgoing, the funny, the enthusiastic. I realized this on a Thursday afternoon while my teammates played thumb war with children they couldn’t communicate with and again, it came to me in a whisper.

Seeing a woman who’d been very quiet and meek during the week boldly leading her church in worship. Unashamedly boasting in Christ as she led in the praise of her Lord, Savior, King and Redeemer. And although everyone was singing loudly, I heard a soft whisper.

Spending time with my teammates, laughing, sharing, crying…knowing that something special was happening and we were experiencing it together. That created a bond that I don’t think will ever be broken between us. And it all happened in whispers of moments.

Realizing that I wasn’t spending my time thinking about my children, missing them, crying for them, longing for them was something that happened when I got back. And I heard in a whisper Christ is sufficient in all things.

Seeing Paul baptize people in the sea. While everyone around me was cheering with excitement, I was still, listening to a whisper say that I would never forget that moment because it was a moment God had orchestrated.

We often overlook whispers, not realizing how much God can teach us about Himself in those moments of softness.
